Objectives:To evaluate the safety and efficacy of Viagra, a drug for erectile dysfunction, on the placebo-controlled clinical trial in patients with diabetes mellitus. A total of 2,051 patients were recruited from the medical centres of Madrid and Barcelona. Subjects were randomly assigned to receive either placebo or a placebo pill.
Methods:All patients received either sildenafil (Viagra®) 10 mg or placebo pills. The two groups were compared for safety and efficacy at baseline and after three and 12 weeks of treatment. The adverse events were assessed by diary or questionnaires and patient self-assessment. The efficacy of Viagra was demonstrated for a total of 2,543 patients in the placebo group and 2,051 in the sildenafil group. In the sildenafil group, the mean change from baseline for the first 12 weeks was significantly greater than the placebo (P < 0.001). The mean difference in the change from baseline from baseline to the end of the treatment was 0.5 points in the sildenafil group. The rate of adverse events from adverse events was significantly greater in the sildenafil group (10% vs 8.1%) than in the placebo group (0% vs 7.1%). Conclusions:In a single treatment-free period, the safety of Viagra was demonstrated for up to 12 weeks. In the placebo-controlled clinical trial, sildenafil was demonstrated to be superior to placebo for the prevention of erectile dysfunction.
